Ear Surgery

Ear Surgery (Otoplasty) is a specialized procedure that not all plastic surgeons perform because it requires significant experience and training. At Renaissance Plastic Surgery, we have performed numerous otoplasty surgeries to reshape the ears and correct ear structure.

What can ear surgery correct?

• Protruding ears
• Deformities due to trauma, cancer, or congenital defects
• Ears that are too large
• Defective ear structure

Are there visible scars after ear surgery?

All ear surgeries are highly individualized, but incisions can usually be placed in areas where the scars will not be visible after surgery, such as behind the ears or within the ear folds. We will discuss your case with you in detail and advise if you can expect any noticeable scars following your procedure.

What happens during an ear surgery/otoplasty procedure?

After a thorough examination, we will determine the best surgical plan for you and will let you know exactly what you can expect from your procedure. Your surgery will involve whatever is required to reshape your ears to a more symmetrical, proportionate, natural, and pleasing appearance.

Ear surgery can be performed under sedation or general anesthetic. Depending on the extent of your surgery, you may be required to spend a night in the hospital, or you might be allowed to go home the same day with instructions for after-care.

What can you expect after ear surgery?

Your ears will be bandaged, so any activities that involve your ears, such as the wearing of ear phones, must be avoided until some healing has taken place. We will provide you with a pain medication prescription to manage any post-surgical discomfort, which may continue for 1-2 weeks.

You can return to normal daily activities, except strenuous exercise, when you feel ready, although you may decide to take a week or two off from work, as there will be some post-surgery inflammation and bruising.

While results from ear surgery are immediate, the swelling may prevent you from seeing the final outcome until the inflammation has subsided.

If stitches are to be removed, we will do so during one of your follow-up appointments.

Is ear surgery right for you?

If you are unhappy with your ears or have suffered an ear injury that has caused one or more of your ears to become misshapen, cosmetic ear surgery is an excellent way to restore a normal appearance.
