Liposuction

Liposuction is a popular surgical procedure to remove unwanted fat from targeted areas of the body that have not responded to diet and exercise. While liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss, it can sculpt and contour the body to reduce pockets of stubborn fat. It is often used on the abdomen, thighs, hips, buttocks, upper arms, knees, calves, neck, and under the chin.

Liposuction is also used for fat injection, in which the fat that is extracted is used as a filler to restore lost volume to the face, neck, or hands. It can often be performed simultaneously with other procedures, most commonly a facelift.  The fat can also be used to fill in traumatic defects, depressions, caused by steroid injections and quite frequently in conjunction with other reconstructive procedures of the breast.

The surgeons at Renaissance Plastic Surgery have performed numerous successful liposuction procedures on both men and women. If you have excess skin after liposuction, you may need further body contouring procedures to tighten the skin as well. This is usually only the case with people who have lost a significant amount of weight.

Are there visible scars after liposuction?

Our surgeons will do their best to place incisions in natural skin creases or other inconspicuous areas. Whether the scars will be visible will depend on where you wish to have liposuction. Only a small incision is required, however, and the scar will fade a great deal over time.

What happens during liposuction?

A small tube called a cannula is inserted through the incision, and the excess fat cells are mechanically broken down as they are “vacuumed” from the body with a suction device. The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia. In some select cases, liposuction can be done under IV sedation or even oral sedation.

The length of your surgery will depend on the size of the area to be treated. During your consultation, we will tell you how long your procedure is likely to last.

What can you expect after liposuction?

Most people take 1-2 weeks off from work after liposuction. We will tell you ahead of time how much time you will need for your recovery.

In most cases, you will be required to wear a compression garment to inhibit swelling and promote healing. Depending on the extent of your liposuction procedure, you will need to wear this garment for a period of days up to a few weeks.

You can expect some bruising and soreness that will gradually subside over the weeks following your surgery. We will give you prescription medication to help you feel more comfortable as you heal.

Please avoid strenuous activity for about a month after liposuction.

Is liposuction right for you?

If, despite diet and exercise, you have areas with stubborn fat that have affected your self-confidence, liposuction may be the answer, restoring a smoother, slimmer appearance to your neck, chin, and/or body.

“In May of this year I had a tummy tuck, lipo and breast lift. It has been a little over 3 months and the change is so unbelievable I still cannot believe it. Dr. Syribeys is unbelievably gifted. If you want the best possible outcome, you will not be disappointed by choosing him as your surgeon. My husband got mad because he thought I had implants put it. He still does not believe me, there are no implants, they just look that good. (No, not kidding). His staff, AMAZING! Total win win.
