What is Contour TRL?

Contour TRL (tunable resurfacing laser) is an Erbium YAG skin resurfacing laser. It is used to address a broad range of skin concerns. The treatments can be tailored to each patient’s needs, with results ranging from the subtle to the dramatic. At Renaissance Plastic Surgery, our aesthetic providers can customize a Contour laser treatment to a depth anywhere from 4-10 microns for a superficial peel with subtle results and a shorter downtime, a medium peel for moderate signs of aging, or full-field laser skin resurfacing for men and women with deep wrinkles near the mouth and eyes and other severe signs of aging.

The independent coagulation and ablation controls in the Contour platform allow our providers to fine-tune the treatment to each patient’s needs and aesthetic goals. Contour TRL is widely regarded as a market leader in laser treatments for the aging face.

How does Contour TRL work?

The system generates a powerful beam of laser energy that targets the top layer of skin, which can be sun-damaged, dry, or uneven with wrinkles and other blemishes. The laser is powered by erbium which is highly absorbed in water.  This fact is what allows the Contour the precision of depth since the skin is mostly water.  The laser also works deeper inside the skin to stimulate new collagen formation. Collagen is an essential skin protein that gives the skin its youthful softness, smoothness, and tightness. By speeding up cell turnover and building more collagen, the Contour TRL laser treatment gives you a revitalized appearance with younger-looking skin.

Am I a candidate for Contour TRL laser treatment?

Contour TRL is effective in all skin types and skin tones. Men and women with signs of aging and sun damage can benefit from Contour laser treatments. If you are bothered by lines and creases around the mouth and eyes, large pores, acne scars, pigmentation, uneven skin tone and texture, age spots, and other skin blemishes, then a Contour TRL laser peel could be right for you. The laser is mainly used on the face and neck but can also be applied to other parts of the body with aging skin.

What to expect during Contour laser treatment?

You will be seen in an initial consultation to determine if you are a good candidate for Contour TRL laser treatment. Our aesthetic providers will examine your skin and obtain a complete medical history. You may need to discontinue certain medications before your laser appointment because they can increase the risk of bruising and bleeding. Also, it is recommended that if you are a smoker, you refrain from smoking for 2 weeks before and after your Contour treatment to prevent healing complications.

The Contour laser treatment itself is pretty straightforward. The procedure takes 15-30 minutes to complete. You will be given protection for your eyes, and the laser device will be applied to your skin. A computer scanner carefully maps the laser beam as it moves across the treatment area.

What are the side effects of Contour laser treatment?

It is common to have some swelling, redness, and discomfort after Contour TRL. Patients typically describe this as a sunburn sensation where the skin feels raw. There can also be some warmth, tightness, or oozing for a few days. Over-the-counter pain medicine can help with any discomfort.

How long is recovery from Contour laser?

Downtime and recovery period after Contour TRL laser will depend on the depth of treatment. You should plan to take one week off from work to give your skin time to heal. The recovery period is around 3-5 days after shallow Contour treatments and around 2 weeks after deeper treatments, with some lingering redness.

When will I see the results of the Contour treatment?

There will be a noticeable improvement in your skin 2 weeks after your Contour appointment. Your skin will appear softer, smoother, plumper, and more youthful at this time. As time goes on and more collagen is made in the skin after your Contour laser therapy, you will notice continued improvement in fine lines, wrinkles, and scars. The final results of your Contour TRL procedure will be visible after 3-4 months. You can make your Contour results last longer by practicing good sun protection with SPF 30 or higher sunscreen. We will give you further skincare instructions after your laser peel, but there is no special aftercare required.

How many Contour TRL treatments will I need?

The Contour Tunable Resurfacing Laser (TRL) is a customizable skin resurfacing treatment. Just one session can lead to a noticeable improvement in your skin. What’s more, the skin continues to improve over the following 4-6 months as more collagen is formed.

In general, the results are more dramatic the deeper the Contour treatment. Your provider will work with you to find a balance between treatment depth and results versus downtime and recovery period. Your individual treatment plan may include one or more Contour TRL treatments with or without other cosmetic procedures for the best results.

Halo Laser vs. Contour TRL Laser – Which one is right for me?

The Halo laser is a hybrid fractional laser that can treat many skin conditions such as sun damage, fine lines, pigment, rough texture, and large pores. It gives dramatic results without the downtime of traditional ablative and fractional lasers. The Contour TRL is a device that can turn back time by eliminating wrinkles, pigmentation, and other signs of aging. So, which one is right for you – Halo or Contour TRL?

If you have severe sun damage and/or deep wrinkles and would like to completely resurface your skin, then Contour TRL is a better choice. On the other hand, a Halo treatment can effectively target fine lines and sun damage with faster healing and shorter downtime. Keep in mind that Halo will not give you the type of dramatic results you can get with Contour TRL. We will be happy to answer further questions and help you decide on the best laser resurfacing treatment for your skin.
